Niobium carbide has the appearance of a dark brown power with high melting point and good stability to chemical agents. It is an extremely hard refractory ceramic material, commercially used in tool bits for cutting tools.
It has an extremely low solubility product in austenite. When niobium carbide is added by micrometre-sized precipitates, it is virtually insoluble in steels at all temperatures.
